Bridge-the-Gap Push-Ups for Hand Strength

This is an excellent chest exercise that also builds GREAT hand strength by using a technique called "bridge-the-gap." You'll be setting your hands across two gaps in between three bumper plates, relying on hand strength to support your body.

I adapted this idea from Dr. Joel Seedman and his versions done with the feet instead of the hands (with various squats and lunges).

This Bridge-the-Gap Push-Up Will Build Your Hand Strength Very Effectively

You'll need three bumper plates for this one. I'm using 35 lb plates here.

Set them on the floor with a gap of just a couple of inches between the plates.

Bridge-the-Gap Push-Ups Setup

Set your hands so that the middle sections of your hands are bridging the gap between them and only the thumb meat side and the blades of your pinky sides are on the plates.

Then do push-ups like that.

Bridge-the-Gap Push-Ups Bottom
This setup works the hands VERY strongly. That gap bridging really forces the hand muscles to contract strongly to not collapse down.

You get a good push-up out of it...good tension in the chest and triceps, but the really money is the hand strength work.

I've got my feet elevated on a bench for more resistance.

Another excellent bumper plate push-up variation is the Angled Plate Push-Up. It forces a massive contraction in your pecs during the entire rep.
